Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 27, 1985. His family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was just two years old.

He was second cousins with rapper Juice Wrld and had two brothers and two sisters. Young Dolph’s grandmother raised him primarily.

Young Dolph developed a love of music early. He was devastated in 2008 when his grandmother passed away.

He turned to music and started rapping as a means of expressing himself. In the end, he issued his debut mixtape, “Paper Route Campaign,” to positive acclaim. The popularity of the mixtape inspired him to learn more about music.

His other mixtapes and songs over the years include “High Class Street Music,” “A Time 2 Kill,” “Blue Magic,” “South Memphis Kingpin,” and “Felix Brothers.”

He was a part of O.T. Genasis’ 2015 hit song “Cut it,” which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. King of Memphis, his debut album, was published in 2016.

Critics reacted well to it. A commercial triumph, it peaked at number 49 on the US Billboard 200. Singles from the album were “Royalty,” “Let Me See It,” and “USA.”

His subsequent album, “Bulletproof,” was released in April 2017 and peaked at number 36 on the US Billboard 200.

His funeral took place on November 30, 2021 by the First Baptist Church Broad Street. Security and Memphis Police accompanied the family’s convoy of black SUVs to the graveyard next to Young Dolph’s high school, Hamilton High School.

Police named Justin Johnson, age 23, as one of the murder suspects on January 5, 2022, and a first-degree murder warrant was then issued.

The Tennessee authorities offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect up to $15,000. Johnson, who went by the rap name Straight Drop, has a documented history of violent crimes and “links to organized criminal groups.”

Philanthropy

He was well-known in the region for his philanthropy, giving $25,000 to his high school, Hamilton, and inspiring kids with his speeches.

Days before to his passing, Thornton, who was well-known for giving free Thanksgiving feasts, donated 200 turkeys to patients at the West Cancer Center and had more dinners planned for days later.
