His father, George, is of Italian and German descent, and his mother, who is German-born, is of German and Russian ancestry.

Few actors in the world have had a career quite as diverse as Leonardo DiCaprios. He has gone from relatively humble beginnings, as a supporting cast member of the sitcom Growing Pains (1985) and low budget horror movies, such as Critters 3 (1991), to a major teenage heartthrob in the 1990s, as the lead actor in movies such as Romeo & Juliet (1996) and Titanic (1997), to then become a leading man in Hollywood blockbusters, made by internationally renowned directors such as Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan.

In fact, he is noted for his portrayals of unconventional and complex characters. These diverse roles helped establish Leo’s reputation as an actor, it wasn’t until his role as Romeo Montague in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet in 1996 that Leonardo became a household name, a true movie star.

The following year, DiCaprio starred in another movie about doomed lovers, Titanic  in 1997, which went on to beat all box office records held before then, as, at the time. Titanic became the highest grossing movie of all time, and cemented DiCaprio’s reputation as a teen heartthrob.

His first agent refused to sign him in the beginning unless he would change his name to “Lenny Williams”, saying that Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio was “too ethnic” to work.

DiCaprio lived with his mum since when he was one year old as his father moved out of their house after he fell in love with another woman. Because his parents wanted to raise him together, they moved into twin cottages with a shared garden in Echo Park, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. DiCaprio’s father lived with his girlfriend and her son, Adam Farrar, with whom DiCaprio developed a close relationship as they grew up.

He attended the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies for four years and later the Seeds Elementary School, before enrolling at the John Marshall High School. Leonardo hated public school and wanted to audition for acting jobs instead, so that he could improve his family’s financial situation. He dropped out of high school following his third year, eventually earning a general equivalency diploma.

Leo developed an interest in performing at the age of two, when he went onto the stage at a performance festival and danced spontaneously, receiving a positive response from the crowd. He further got the urge and motivation to learn acting thanks to his stepbrother’s appearance in a television commercial, for which Farrar earned $50,000.
