Early Life and Education

Hikaru Nakamura was born in Hirakata, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, to American musician and former public school teacher Carolyn Merrow Nakamura and Japanese father Shuichi Nakamura.

Asuka is Nakamura’s elder brother. His family relocated to the United States when he was two years old, and his parents separated a year later, in 1990.

White Plains, New York, served as his upbringing. His Sri Lankan stepfather, FIDE Master and chess author Sunil Weeramantry, taught him the game when he was just seven years old.

After Asuka Nakamura won the National Kindergarten Championship in 1992, Weeramantry started working with the Nakamura brothers and got to know their mother.

Career

When Hikaru Nakamura defeated Jay Bonin at the Marshall Chess Club at the age of 10, he made history as the youngest American to defeat an International Master.

Also at age of 10, Nakamura broke Vinay Bhat’s record for the youngest player to receive the United States Chess Federation’s title of “chess master.”

Nakamura’s record remained until 2008, when Nicholas Nip received the title at the age of 9 years and 11 months.

Hikaru Nakamura received the Laura Aspis Prize in 1999, which is granted each year to the best player under 13 with a USCF rating.

In 2003, at the age of 15 years and 79 days, Nakamura cemented his status as a chess prodigy by surpassing Bobby Fischer’s previous record and becoming the youngest American to hold the title of grandmaster.

Hikaru Nakamura finished in 56th position at the 30th World Open competition in Philadelphia in July 2002.

Nakamura placed fourth in the “B” group at the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, in April 2004.

By overcoming grandmasters Sergey Volkov, Aleksej Aleksandrov, and Alexander Lastin to get to the fourth round of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2004, which was held in Tripoli, Libya, Nakamura eventually lost to England’s Michael Adams, the third-seeded competitor and eventual runner-up.

Nakamura was chosen as the 19th Frank Samford Chess Fellow on June 20, 2005. He was awarded a grant of $32,000 to further his chess training and competition.
