Early Life and Education
Tyler Gregory Okonma, the son of a Nigerian father with Igbo ancestry and an American mother with mixed African-American and white Canadian ancestry, was born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California.
He never got to know his father, spent his formative years in Hawthorne, and moved to Ladera Heights at the age of 17.
Before he could even start to make music, at the age of seven, he would pull the cover off a CD case and build covers for his own fictitious albums, complete with tracklists and song lengths.
He started learning how to play the piano when he was 14 years old. He attended 12 different schools in the Sacramento and Los Angeles regions over the course of his twelve years in school.

In the eighth grade, Okonma joined the theatre class and was forced out owing to being too hyper, and in the ninth grade, Okonma was not permitted to join the band class because he could not read music.
He spent slightly under two weeks with FedEx and more over two years at Starbucks. Okonma got the name for his stage persona from a Myspace page where he shared his artistic endeavors.
When Tyler The Creator self-released his debut mixtape Bastard in 2009, the online music press took notice of the mixtape’s horrorcore-influenced sound and violent, pornographic lyrics.
Goblin (2011), his first studio album, helped him gain mainstream recognition thanks to the success of the single “Yonkers” and its corresponding music video.
During this time, Okonma faced criticism for his lyrics, most notably with the song Yonkers, while Odd Future had a surge in popularity.
With the release of his second album, Wolf (2013), Okonma started to depart from his signature horrorcore sound and adopt a more alternative hip hop sound.
His 2015 album Cherry Bomb had a larger focus on lyrical and jazz-fused sounds which has continued throughout his later discography.
Call Me If You Get Lost (2021), Igor (2019), and Flower Boy (2017) are among Okonma’s later albums that have received widespread praise from critics.
The latter two also debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and won Best Rap Album at the 2020 and 2022 Grammy Awards, respectively.
As a visual artist, Okonma has developed the cover art for Odd Future’s releases, their clothes, and other goods.
Tyler The Creator started the music festival Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in 2012 after founding the streetwear company Golf Wang in 2011.
From 2015 and 2018, Okonma founded and ran the streaming service Golf Media, which featured Tyler’s original scripted series and a broadcast of every Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival.
