Obi Okoli was born in a village in Anambra State where he grew up with his family and had his early education.
Obi Okoli pursued his secondary education at Agulu Grammar School, Agulu. Following that, he furthered his studies in Theatre Arts at the esteemed University of Ibadan (UI), graduating with honors in 1979.
Additionally, he received training at the Colorado Film School. He successfully completed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps in 1980.
Career
Following his National Youth Service Corps, Obi secured a broadcasting role at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Aba division. Over his eighteen-year tenure from 1981 to 1999, he not only anchored news shows but also showcased his talents by writing, directing, and producing TV series and documentaries.
In a career spanning over three decades, Obi has left his mark in Nollywood, featuring in notable films such as the 1985 adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart,” as well as “The Trip,” “King of Kings,” “Venom,” “Not Alone,” “Idejimba,” “My Father’s Love,” “Royal Deceit,” and more.
Beyond acting, he is the founder and CEO of Idejimba Films, which produced the movie “Like A Diamond” in 2019. In 2011, Obi joined the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as a lecturer, contributing his expertise to the Department of Theatre and Film Studies for the past nine years.
