Early Life and Education
Born on March 23, 1994, in Osun State, Nigeria, Mayorkun is the eldest of three siblings in a family with a background in entertainment.
His mother is a Nollywood actress, and his father is an artist and movie producer. Mayorkun’s early exposure to music came through his involvement in the choir, where he learned the basics of the art.
He holds a degree in accounting from the University of Lagos and was employed in the banking sector before his discovery in 2016.
Career
Mayorkun made a significant career move when he left his banking job due to inadequate pay. In February 2016, his cover video caught the eye of Davido.
Following Davido’s interest in him on Twitter and Instagram, a conversation ensued, where Davido inquired about Mayorkun’s musical talents beyond the keyboard.
Remarkably, Mayorkun received a call from Davido on the very day he drafted his resignation letter. He promptly shared some of his recorded songs with Davido, leading to his signing with Davido Music Worldwide.
Under the label, Mayorkun released his debut single, “Eleko,” in 2016. The song made a notable impact, debuting at number 9 on the Nigeria Playdata charts and reaching number 5 in subsequent weeks.
The music video for “Eleko” amassed a million views within the first ten days of its release. Mayorkun continued to add to his repertoire with singles such as “Yawa,” “Sade,” “Che Che,” and “Mama.”
In October 2018, he released singles “Posh” and “Fantasy,” featuring Olu Maintain, as part of the buildup to his debut studio album, “The Mayor of Lagos,” which was officially released on November 16, 2018.
The album even made it to the Billboard World Albums chart, peaking at number 15 on December 1, 2018.
In 2020, Mayorkun was among the artists scheduled to perform at the Eko Hotel and Suites Convention Center in Lagos for the 2020 Vanguard Personality Awards. This event featured other notable artists, including Tekno and Timaya.
Mayorkun embarked on a nationwide tour in 2017, performing at over 35 schools. He concluded the year with his inaugural headline concert in Lagos, known as “The Mayor of Lagos.”
