Mary-Ann was born in 1971 in Nairobi, Kenya to Chris Kirubi (1921–2021) and Fiona Kirubi. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she grew up with her brother Robert Kirubi and step-sister Fiona Farha Kirubi.
Her father emphasized education and taught her to learn by observing his business conversations rather than directly inducting her into the family business.
She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business Administration and a Master of Science in Management, both from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom.

Mary-Ann began her corporate career at age 23 in 1994, working with Coca-Cola Company, Kenya Commercial Bank where she served five years as Marketing Director, GlaxoSmithKline, and Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency.
In 2011, she resigned from KCB to open Secret Garden, a high-end restaurant on Riverside Drive in Nairobi, and later launched Olpul at Two Rivers in 2017, though both closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After her father was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2018, she was appointed Managing Director of Haco Industries Limited in February 2019 and worked closely with him during his final five years. Following his death in June 2021, she inherited 80% of his estate with her brother Robert.
