Early Life and Education
On February 5th, 1986, Kevin Jerome Gilyard became Kevin Gates. He is the son of Martha Green Gates, who also happens to be his mother, and was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States.
When he was only 17 years old, his father passed away not long after their relationship began when he was in the eighth grade. Kevin Gates grew up with his younger brother, Brandon Gilyard.
Career
When Kevin Gates joined the local record label Dead Game Records in 2005, he started his career.
He had hookups with Webbie and Boosie Badazz as well. The trio worked together on the mixtape “Pack of Da Littler” in 2007.
Their second mixtape, “All or Nuthin,” was released in 2008. But not long after, Kevin Gates had another legal run-in and was given a prison term of over two years.
He completed a prison education program and earned a master’s in psychology during this period. Because to his exemplary conduct, he was released early.
As soon as he was let out of jail, he started writing songs. His mixtape “Make Em Believe” achieved a certain amount of success.
In 2014, he issued the mixtape “By Any Means.” It was released under his Bread Winners’ Association label and was distributed by Atlantic Records.
It sold 17,000 copies in the US and featured the top hits “Don’t Know,” “Posed to Be in Love,” and “Amnesia.”
In December of the same year, Kevin Gates released “Luka Brasi 2,” another commercially successful mixtape.
It was released by Atlantic Records, his own record label, and Bread Winners’ Association. Within ten months, over 83,000 copies had been sold in the US, where it debuted on the Billboard 200 at position 38.
He released a number of successful mixtapes throughout the years, the most recent of which was Murder for Hire 2 in 2016.
With 20,000 copies sold in its first week and a Billboard 200 debut at number two, it was a big hit. The tunes featured “The Prayer,” “Great Example,” and “Click Mouse.”
His debut studio album, “Islah,” was made available in January 2016. The album was a huge success because to songs like “2 Phones,” “Time for That,” and “Really Really.”
In its first week, it sold 93,000 copies in the United States, debuting at #2 on the Billboard 200. Additionally, it reached number 16 on the Canadian Albums Chart.
