Jidenna spent part of his childhood in Nigeria, where his father worked as a computer science professor at Enugu State University.
Jidenna’s family returned to the United States when he was six years old. The family relocated to Norwood, Massachusetts, in 1995, and then to Milton, Massachusetts, in 2000. In 2010, his father passed away.
He co-founded the rap group Black Spadez in high school and began producing, arranging, and writing. Jidenna debut album was issued as a final project with Black Spadez at Milton Academy, where he graduated in 2003.
After graduating from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity in 2008, he pursued his music career while working full-time as a teacher, moving between Los Angeles, Oakland, Brooklyn, and Atlanta before signing a deal with Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Records.
Jidenna is released by Epic Records and signed to Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Records label. He’s worked with a variety of artists on the label, including Roman GianArthur, St. Beauty, Deep Cotton, and Janelle Monáe herself, and then began recording The Eephus, a five-song collection of the label’s inaugural extended play (EP).
Jidenna released his first official song, “Classic Man”, with GianArthur in February 2015. The song was heavily played in the US and debuted at number 49 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
The EP’s second single, “Yoga,” by Janelle Monáe and Jidenna, was released on March 31, 2015. At the 58th Grammy Awards, his song “Classic Man” was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
Jidenna performed the song alongside Monáe at the BET Awards in June of the same year. In November, Jidenna won the title for best new artist at the 2015 Soul Train Music Awards.
Jidenna is a founding member of Fear & Fancy, a California-based social club founded in 2006. The organization, which is modeled after New Orleans’ social aid and pleasure clubs, is a worldwide group of entrepreneurs, activists, educators, scientists, and artists that hosts soirees, dinner parties, and demonstrations.

KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane, as well as the Nigerian Highlife music genre, are among Jidenna’s significant influences.
The musician created his unique style in college, where his psychology professor Philip Zimbardo taught him about the power of dress.
He would not, however, acquire his distinctive dandy style until his father’s death in 2010. Jidenna characterizes his style as a “marriage of European and African aesthetics” that is “heavily inspired by the Harlem Renaissance with elements of traditional West African design.”
Jidenna is currently based in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood.
