Early Life and Education
Akume’s early life began in Gboko, Benue State. He completed his primary education at Native Authority Primary School in Wannune (1965) and obtained his Senior School Certificate from Mount Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School, Makurdi (1972).
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Ibadan (1978) and later returned to the same institution for a Master’s degree in Industrial and Labour Relations (1986).
His time at the University of Ibadan also saw him engaged in student politics, as a member of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
Career
Before venturing into politics, Akume worked as a civil servant in Benue State, climbing to the rank of permanent secretary.
Political Career
Akume’s political career took off in 1999 when he was elected Governor of Benue State under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He served two terms, becoming the first governor in Benue State to complete two consecutive terms in office.

Transitioning to the Senate in 2007, Akume represented the Benue North-West Senatorial District for three terms until 2019. His leadership roles in the Senate included serving as Minority Leader (2011-2015) and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army.
In 2019, Akume was appointed Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs by President Muhammadu Buhari, a position he held until 2023. He was subsequently appointed as the SGF by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023.
