Benjamin Lloyd Crump was born near Fort Liberty in Lumberton, North Carolina. He is the eldest among his nine siblings and step-siblings. Crump grew up in an extended family setting and was primarily raised by his grandmother. His mother, Helen, worked as a hotel maid and in a local Converse shoe factory.

During his high school years, Crump attended South Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida, where he lived with his mother’s second husband, who was a math teacher and played a fatherly role in his life.

Crump pursued his higher education at Florida State University. In 1992, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, followed by his Juris Doctor degree in 1995. Crump is also a lifelong member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, which holds significant importance to him.

Career

In 2002, Crump served as the legal representative for the family of Genie McMeans, Jr., an African American driver who was fatally shot by a White state trooper.

He also represented the family of Martin Lee Anderson in 2007, a teenager who died after being beaten by guards at a Florida youth detention center.
