Early Life and Education
MacDowell was born on April 21, 1958, in Gaffney, South Carolina, to timber executive Marion St. Pierre MacDowell and music instructor Pauline “Paula” Johnston (née Oswald).
Her background comprises English, French, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh, and she has three older sisters.
Her mother was an alcoholic, and when she was six years old, her parents got divorced.
After a year of sobriety, MacDowell’s mother passed away from a heart attack in 1981 at the age of 53. When MacDowell was eight years old, her father remarried, this time to Mary Frances Stone, who had previously been married. This union lasted until his passing.
After graduating from Gaffney High School in 1976, MacDowell spent two years as a student at Winthrop University before briefly relocating to Columbia, South Carolina.
