Early Life and Education
Ali Baba was born on June 24, 1965, in Agbarha-Otor, Delta State, Nigeria. He is the first son of several children, and his father is a retired soldier who served in Lagos. He spent his first 8 years in Warri, Delta State.
For his secondary education, he attended Command Secondary School in Ipaja, Lagos State, and Ibru College in Agbarha-Otor, Delta State. He later attended Bendel State University, now known as Ambrose Alli University, in Ekpoma, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Philosophy.
During his university years, he was a neighbor to Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. Ali Baba originally planned to study Law but chose comedy after realizing he could be more successful making people laugh.
Career
Ali Baba graduated in 1990 and relocated to Lagos to develop his comedy talent. In 1991, he worked as an executive assistant to Prince Adedapo Benjamin Adelegan of DP Lekki Limited.
During his early career, he performed at corporate events and appeared on TV shows with Patrick Doyle, Charly Boy, and Danladi Bako. He also made radio cameo appearances with Bisi Olatilo, Sani Irabor, and Mani Onumonmu. He became the pioneer corporate comedian in Nigeria and the first Nigerian comedian to perform on commercial flights.
In 2012, he became the first comedian to ring the Nigerian Stock Exchange Year End Closing Bell. He has appeared on CNN African Voices, BBC, and Al Jazeera. He serves as the Special Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps. In 2009, he was inducted into Johnnie Walker’s Striding Man Society, and in April 2018, he received the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International.
In 2014, he founded the 1 January Concert, an annual comedy show where comedians review the previous year and award first-class graduates. In 2015, he launched Spontaneity, a quarterly competition for budding comedians, where Woli Arole was a 2016 finalist. Ali Baba married Mary Akpobome in 2006. Mary serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Imperium Capital Partners.
The couple has eight children total: three daughters named Xsara, Brandi (also known as Brenda), and Valerie; two sons named Ejiro and Tejiri; and triplet sons named Aaron, Andrew, and Alexander who were born in February 2024. The birth of the triplets was announced on April 1, 2024, and was initially thought to be an April Fool’s prank.
The triplets were dedicated at RCCG Christ The Lord Central Parish in Lagos in May 2024. Ali Baba was 59 years old when the triplets were born. He refuted infidelity rumors in 2022, confirming that he and Mary remain married.
