Early Life and Education
Jackson, who had four older sisters, was born in Newnan, Georgia, to parents Joseph Eugene “Daddy Gene” Jackson (1927-2000) and Ruth Musick “Mama Ruth” Jackson (1930-2017).
He shared a small house with his immediate family, which had been constructed around his grandfather’s old toolshed. The family has a predominance of English ancestry.
Prior to her passing on January 7, 2017, his mother resided in the house. In 1983, he started writing music.
Up until a buddy introduced him to Gene Watson, John Anderson, and Hank Williams Jr., Jackson listened to mostly church music.
After graduating from the neighborhood Elm Street Elementary and Newnan High School, Jackson joined the band Dixie Steel.
At the age of 27, Jackson and Denise, his wife of six years, relocated from Newnan to Nashville, Tennessee, with the intention of pursuing music professionally.
At Doc’s Place in Hendersonville, Tennessee, Jackson recorded a pre-debut demo album named New Traditional in 1987, but it is incredibly uncommon and was only made available in Japan.
