Early Life And Education
Born and raised in Overport, Durban, Palesa Nomthandazo Phumelele Modiga discovered her passion for music at the age of 10, where she began singing for local competitions in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
She furthered her musical education at the National School of Arts in Johannesburg, studying classical piano, clarinet, and vocals. Continuing her journey, Modiga pursued Jazz performance studies at the College of Music, University of Cape Town from 2013 to 2015.
During this time, she excelled by winning the South African Music Rights Organisation’s Overseas Scholarships Competition for Jazz. Modiga’s talent was further showcased in 2016 when she competed on The Voice South Africa, reaching the Top 8.
Career
Zoë Modiga musical career soared with the release of her debut studio album Yellow: The Novel in 2017, which garnered nominations for Best African Artist Album and Best Jazz Album at the South African Music Awards.
Following the success of her debut, Modiga released her second studio album, Inganekwane, on June 26, 2020. This album blends jazz composition, Motown soul, and African storytelling, earning global recognition as it debuted at number one.
Modiga’s musical journey continued to flourish as she headlined the 14th Annual Mzansi Fela Festival at the State Theatre in Guateng in December 2021.
Zoë Modiga announced the Cos Cos Yaphela Tour in September, along with the reveal of her highly anticipated third studio album. The tour, with 3 exclusive dates, began in September and concluded at The Star Theatre in Cape Town on October 20th.
