Early Life and Education
Yinka Edward was born in the southwest region of Nigeria where he grew up with his parents and siblings.
He had his early education in Lagos, obtaining his first school leaving certificate and senior school certificate before proceeding to a higher institution.
Career
After graduating from the National Film Institute in Jos, Nigeria in 2006, Edward began his career.
He collaborated with Nigerian director Mak ‘Kusare on the film Ninety Degrees and was also a part of the BBC’s production team for the Wetin Dey series.
Following his work on Wetin Dey, Edward filmed The Ties That Bind in Namibia, marking the country’s first locally produced series. Upon returning to Nigeria, he contributed to Kunle Afolayan’s films, including The Figurine, Phone Swap, and October 1.
Additionally, he worked on Izu Ojukwu’s movies Alero’s Symphony and ’76. In Kenya, he directed the feature film Something Necessary, produced by Tom Tykwer and directed by Judy Kibinge.
Something Necessary was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013 and received a nomination for the Audience Choice Award at the Chicago International Film Festival in the same year.
One of his recent achievements is the Netflix original movie Lionheart, a Nigerian feature film directed by Genevieve Nnaji.
