Early Life and Education
Earlier in her career, Dr. Anya held positions as an assistant professor of second language acquisition in Curriculum and Instruction at Penn State University, an assistant professor of teacher education in TESOL at the University of Southern California, a visiting assistant professor and the faculty director of the Dartmouth College Portuguese language study abroad program in Salvador-Bahia, Brazil, as well as a lecturer in applied linguistics, TESOL, Portuguese, and Spanish at UCLA and Dartmouth College.
She earned her BA in Romance languages from Dartmouth College, her MA in Brazilian studies from Brown University, and her PhD in applied linguistics from UCLA.

Dr. Uju Anya is an Associate professor of second language acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University, who teaches and conducts research in the field.
Her main research areas include critical applied linguistics, critical sociolinguistics, and critical discourse studies, which focus on how African American pupils perceive race, gender, sexual orientation, and social class identities when they learn a new language.
She possesses expertise in applied linguistics as a social justice practice, intercultural communication, diversity, equity, and inclusion in instructional methods and curriculum design, as well as service-learning and civic engagement in secondary and tertiary level language programs.
Uju Anya’s book, Racialized won The 2019 American Association for Applied Linguistics First Book Award in second language learning: Speaking blackness in Brazil (Routledge 2017), which honors a researcher whose first book represents outstanding work and makes an exceptional contribution to the field.
The book is the first work of sociolinguistic analysis and critical assessment of the language learning experience of African Americans to be written by a single author.
In addition to exploring how students construct and negotiate their various identities in multilingual settings, it makes recommendations for how a multilingual approach (such as translanguaging and plurilingual practice) can be used to enhance language instruction.
At the end of 2021, SUNY Press will publish her second book, a co-edited volume titled Racial equity on college campuses: Connecting research to practice.
