Early Life and Education
In San Antonio, Texas, where she was born, Glau grew up alongside her two younger sisters, Christie and Kaitlin. She has German and Scots-Irish background. Her father is a general contractor, and her mother is a teacher.
In order to accommodate her ballet studies, Glau was homeschooled from grades 3 through 12 and acquired a scholarship to a dance company.
She studied tango and flamenco in addition to classical ballet. In 2002, Glau relocated to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career after a fractured toe put a stop to her dancing career.
Career
In a 2002 episode of the television show Angel, Glau played a guest role as a ballerina. This was her debut on television.
There, she caught the attention of director Joss Whedon, who later chose her for the role of River Tam in his critically acclaimed but brief-lived TV series Firefly.
She later played the same part in the show’s feature film follow-up Serenity. Before meeting Whedon, Glau had already competed for the part of a Power Ranger (White Wild Force Ranger Alyssa Enrilé in Power Rangers Wild Force), but she lost to actress Jessica Rey.
In the Cold Case television episode “Love Conquers Al,” Glau made an appearance. She portrayed high school senior Shelly in a short part in the movie Sleepover.
Additionally, she played Crystal Burns in season two of The Unit in the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode “What’s Eating Gilbert Grissom?” (the girlfriend of Jeremy Erhart).
In the season two premiere of The 4400 in 2006, Glau played Tess Doerner, a paranoid schizophrenic who had returned, and from season three on, she played a recurrent role.
She also had a role in the comedy-horror movie Mammoth. The Initiation of Sarah, an ABC Family television film, starred Glau.
Glau played Cameron Phillips, a Terminator infiltration unit sent back in time to defend John Connor and Sarah Connor against Skynet, in the television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which made its debut on January 13, 2008.
