Early Life and Education
Shayne Topp was born on September 14, 1991, in Florida to Robert Royal Topp and Catherine Topp (née Person). Wayne Topp, his grandfather, was a fighter pilot as well.
Being a military family, they frequently moved. In the 55th episode of Smosh’s podcast, SmoshCast, Topp revealed that he was raised primarily in Arizona but also spent time in Florida, Virginia, and California as a child.
When Topp was 18 months old, he drowned in the backyard pool and was pronounced dead.
He claims that while his mother sprinted to get him, she overheard someone calling his name. On site, he was revived.
Shayne Topp and Noah Grossman, a friend and fellow Smosh member, took acting lessons from Laura Marano’s mother.
Career
Additionally, Topp has experience performing in theater, having played the lead roles in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at Highland Lakes Theatre and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at Wonderworks Theatre Co. (in the title role). He has also made appearances in ads.
For his work in Dear Lemon Lima, he went on to receive the Jury Prize at the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival.
He and Damien Haas, a current Smosh member, appeared in the Disney Channel series So Random! in 2012.
He was also a candidate for the 2014 Young Hollywood Awards’ “Exciting New Face (Male)” award.
Due to a lack of job, he first intended to move away in 2015; however, fellow Smosh member Noah Grossman persuaded him to try out for the cast of Smosh, of which he has been a part ever since.
Smosh’s parent company, Defy Media, filed for bankruptcy in late 2018. Topp and the rest of the cast, however, continued to produce videos, and in early 2019, it was revealed that Mythical Entertainment had acquired Smosh.
On ABC’s The Goldbergs, Topp has played Matt Bradley, a recurring character who is Barry Goldberg’s (Troy Gentile) best friend, since 2017.
Shayne Topp obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Arizona State University’s online campus in 2019, after working for it from 2009.
The Smosh team staged a mock dedication and graduation ceremony that was unexpected and published to Smosh Pit in December 2019.
