Sarah Adwoa Safo is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician who carved her name into Ghana’s political history. Born on December 28, 1981, she served as the Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya Constituency from 2013 until 2025. Beyond parliament, she held two major ministerial roles: Minister of State in charge of Government Procurement at the Presidency and later Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection. Early Life and Education
Safo grew up under the care of Apostle Dr. Ing. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, a well-known Ghanaian inventor, pastor, industrialist, and philanthropist called the “Star of Africa.” Her father founded the Kristo Asafo Mission and the Kantanka Group of Companies.
She was home-tutored and showed brilliance early. At just 17, she passed her GCE A’ Level exams in 1998. She entered the University of Ghana’s Faculty of Law at the same age, graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Law degree and serving as Vice-President of the Law Students Union.
By age 22 in October 2004, she was called to the Bar, becoming the youngest lawyer ever admitted to the Ghana Bar. She later earned a Masters of Law in Government Procurement Law from George Washington University in 2005 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Procurement Law and Policy from the University of Nottingham in 2022.
Career
Safo worked briefly with the Office of the Attorney General in Washington, DC, before returning to Ghana to practice law privately. From 2005 to 2007, she served as the first legal advisor to the Public Procurement Authority, where she helped create the Appeals and Complaint Panel and rebrand the Public Procurement Board into the Authority.
In 2012, she was elected MP for Dome-Kwabenya on the NPP ticket and won re-election in 2016 and 2020. In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed her Minister of State for Government Procurement while she served as Deputy Majority Leader.
In 2021, she became Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection but was dismissed from this role in July 2022 after missing office for over nine months while caring for her child abroad.
She continued as MP until 2025 but lost the 2024 NPP race to Mike Oquaye Jnr by over 700 votes. She also served as Executive Secretary of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities from 2018 to 2021.
Personal Life
Safo married Hanny Nana Yaw Mouhtiseb on August 17, 2019. Before this, she had two children with politician Kennedy Agyepong, whom she confirmed in 2016 while clarifying she was never married to him. She now has three children total: Kelvin and Daniella (with Agyepong) and a baby born in 2021 with her husband.
Her father passed away in September 2025 at age 77. Safo’s hometown is Bekwai in the Ashanti Region, and she is Christian.
