Early Life And Education
Hailing from Brooklyn, New York City, Phillips had a unique upbringing that involved splitting time between Georgetown, Guyana, and the East New York neighborhood.
His passion for music was sparked at a young age, influenced by his older brother’s rap performances with friends. By the time he was twelve, Phillips was already creating his own music. It was during his early high school days in Guyana that he penned his very first song.
Career
Before using the Saint Jhn stage name, he performed and wrote music under his birth name, Carlos St. John (or Carlos Saint John). In 2010, he released an EP called The St. John Portfolio and a mixtape called In Association using his birth name.
Music executive Zach Katz flew him to Los Angeles in 2010 where he spent two months writing songs for Rihanna, though none of his records were chosen. Afterward, Saint Jhn co-wrote the Hoodie Allen song “No Interruption”.
Over the next few years, he wrote songs for artists like Kiesza, Gorgon City, and Nico & Vinz. In 2016, he earned a writer credit for Usher’s songs “Crash” and “Rivals” from the album Hard II Love.
Also in 2016, he released his first song under the name Saint Jhn called “1999”, followed by “Roses” and “Reflex”. He then announced an opening slot for Post Malone on the West Coast.
