Nichols, a 1991 graduate of Winston Churchill High School, contributed to and edited the school newspaper.
She worked as a summer intern at USA Today, the Chicago Sun-Times, and The Washington Post while attending Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
Michael Wilbon, The Washington Post’s top sports columnist at the time, encountered Nichols when she was an intern at the age of 18, and he noted that “she had supreme confidence.”
As a freelance newspaper reporter covering the Chicago Bulls during their first three-peat, Nichols’ first assignment was to cover the team’s practises.
Michael Jordan summoned her out to speak after a few media appearances during which she took notes but did not ask any questions.
After the encounter, the two started talking often, and Nichols acknowledged that it helped her develop as a journalist.
She graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree when she was 21.
Career
Nichols embarked on her career as a sportswriter, initially working for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, where she covered the University of Miami football team and the Miami Dolphins.
In 1996, she moved on to The Washington Post, where she focused on reporting about the NHL’s Washington Capitals.
As her experience grew, she expanded her coverage to encompass various sports, including professional tennis, the Olympics, the NBA, and Major League Baseball.
Throughout her tenure as a sportswriter, Nichols interviewed and wrote about renowned athletes like Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Venus, and Serena Williams during the early stages of their careers.
In 2004, Rachel Nichols decided to transition to broadcasting and joined ESPN as a reporter. Her expertise led her to make regular appearances on popular ESPN shows like SportsCenter, Sunday NFL Countdown, and Monday Night Countdown.
Additionally, she became a familiar face as a sideline reporter for Monday Night Football and NBA broadcasts. Nichols also took on the role of a correspondent for E:60, further showcasing her versatility in sports journalism and establishing strong connections with prominent sports figures.
Her rapport with athletes and her excellence in her field earned her a spot on Esquire’s list of “Women We Love.”
In January 2013, Nichols made a significant move to CNN/Turner Sports, where she was entrusted with anchoring the network’s first sports-related program in over a decade.
Her arrival was highly regarded in the industry, and her show, “Unguarded with Rachel Nichols,” premiered in October of the same year.
Although it later shifted from a regular series to occasional specials, Nichols continued to make her mark as a sideline reporter for the NBA on TNT program, covering both regular season and playoff games. She also contributed to “Inside the NBA.”
During the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, she took on the role of a sideline reporter for CBS and TBS, working alongside Verne Lundquist and Bill Rafferty. Additionally, Nichols served as a dugout reporter for TBS during MLB playoff games.
Throughout her career, Rachel Nichols received accolades for her tenacious interviews, notably her tough questioning of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell following the Ray Rice scandal and her willingness to confront boxer Floyd Mayweather about his history of domestic violence.
