Early life and Education
Monica Ene Ogah popularly known as Monica Ogah was born in Makurdi, Benue State, on August 7, 1990. She is the youngest of six children, and one of her earliest influences was her mother, a choir mistress.
“Mother would also remind me of how sweet my voice was when I made those innocent cries, which she believed was laced with God’s given voice,” she said in an interview with Thisday News.
She also revealed that her father had hoped she would become a nurse and would not support her musical ambitions unless she was chosen as the winner of the Project Fame reality show from a pool of popular finalists.
She received her primary education at Bammco Nursery and Primary School before transferring to Methodist Girls’ High School in Otukpo, Benue State. She then transferred to Benue State University to study nursing but was forced to leave when she was unable to meet the academic demands.
When Monica decided to pursue a career in music, she received little encouragement from many people, particularly her father, who wanted her to become a nurse. But as God would have it, she has so forth showcase the God-given talented that her made her stand tall among her peers, a talent she honed right from childhood during the Children Sunday school days in church.
Career
In August 2011, Monica Ogah auditioned for the fourth season of MTN Project Fame West Africa. She passed the audition and was one of nineteen contestants chosen to join the music academy. Ogah shone throughout her time on the show, earning praise from the judges for her performance.
On December 18, 2011, she was declared the winner, becoming the competition’s second female winner after Chidinma. As a reward for his victory, Ogah was given a recording contract with Ultima Studios and was managed by Goretti Company.
Ogah released her debut studio album, Sometime in August, in August 2013, two years after appearing on Project Fame. It featured collaborations with singers Wizboyy and Chidinma.
TY Mix, Del B, Silvastone, Wizboyy, J. Sleek, and Tha Suspekt all contributed to the album’s production. Her vocal style ranges from R&B to pop to soul to highlife.
Prior to its release, the album’s lead single “Body Hug” received significant airplay on radio stations across Nigeria, as did the song’s music video, directed by Clarence Peters.
In April 2014, Ogah released “Obim bu nke gi,” an Igbo Language love song featuring Harrysongz. The music video for the song was shot in South Africa.
At The Headies 2014, Monica was nominated for an award as Best Vocal Performance (Female).
