Early Life and Education
Kabelo grew up in Diepkloof, Soweto, surrounded by the music that would become his life. As a teenager, he was obsessed with gangsta rap, studying N.W.A. and Ice-T, but also appreciated Nina Simone’s soul and Nirvana’s raw energy.
He attended St. Stithian’s College in Randburg, where he met his future TKZee partners, Tokollo “Magesh” Tshabalala and Zwai Bala. High school Kabelo was also a sports enthusiast, setting the stage for his later running career.
Career
TKZee started in 1996 with Kabelo, Zwai Bala, and Tokollo Tshabalala. Their hits “Phalafala” and “Shibobo” dominated airwaves, and they performed at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony.
Kabelo launched his solo career in 2000 with Everybody Watching, which sold 100,000 copies. His next albums Rebel With A Cause (2002) and And the Beat Goes On (2003) won the South African Music Award for Best Kwaito Album and sold 150,000 copies.
He won the Kora Award for Best Southern Africa Male Artist in 2004. He continued with Exodus (2006), I’m A King (2007), and the gospel-focused Immortal series (2011–2015).
Beyond music, he became a Reebok brand ambassador, ran the Comrades Marathon three times, served as an Olympic Ambassador, presented on SABC2, judged SA’s Got Talent, and in 2019 TKZee received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th South African Music Awards.

Kabelo is married to actress Gail Nkoane Mabalane (wed February 9, 2013). They have two children: daughter Zoe Leano Mabalane (born March 28, 2015) and son Khumo Mabalane (born January 31, 2018).
Kabelo survived a devastating battle with drug addiction and has maintained 23 years of sobriety since 1996, now serving as a pastor at Rhema Bible Church in Randburg.
He’s a born-again Christian since 1996 and officially ordained as a pastor in 2019 after serving at Rhema Bible Church since 2005.
