Joyce Anne DeWitt, born April 23, 1949, better known as Joyce DeWitt, is a famous American actress and comedian, best known for her role as Janet Wood in the ABC sitcom Three’s Company. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, and raised in Speedway, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis.

Early Life and Education

Joyce DeWitt was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, and raised in Speedway, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis. She is a Speedway Senior High School alumna who previously worked at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ticket office. Her ancestors are Italian.

She competed in the Indiana High School Forensic Association’s speech and debate competitions.

After graduating from Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in theater, she proceeded to California to pursue her master’s degree at the University of California, where she graduated in 1974.

DeWitt began performing on stage when he was 13 years old. Ball State University awarded her a Bachelor of Arts degree. The director persuaded her to enroll in UCLA’s Department of Theater MFA program while she was performing in summer stock, and she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship.

She worked as a secretary while at UCLA until she made her television debut on an episode of Baretta. Dewitt has stated that she never met actor Abe Vigoda, despite rumors to the contrary.

DeWitt is best known for playing Janet Wood on the comedy Three’s Company from 1977 to 1984, a position she landed after auditioning for the show’s second pilot. In a 1979 episode of the spinoff series The Ropers, she played Janet.

Following the conclusion of Three’s Company in 1984, DeWitt featured in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves before taking a break from performing for several years

In June 1991, she returned to acting with a role in the Cherry County Playhouse’s production of Noises Off. She went on to star in the 1995 television comedy film Spring Fling! In a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain, a character based on her appeared, voiced by another actress.

She made a cameo in the penultimate episode of Living Single and appeared in an episode of Cybill. TV shows including Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild were among her efforts in the 2000s.

Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Three’s Company, a 2003 NBC-TV television film, was co-produced and hosted by DeWitt. Melanie Paxson portrays DeWitt in the film.

DeWitt made an appearance on Suzanne Somers’ talk show Suzanne Somers: Breaking Through in 2012, when she and Somers reminisced about their time on Three’s Company.

Somers apologized for the squabble between them, and they swapped stories about the last time they spoke to their late co-star John Ritter.

DeWitt’s visit on Somers’ show was the first time the two actresses had seen or spoken to each other in 31 years, when they had a severe falling out over a financial disagreement.

In 2018, DeWitt starred as Mother Superior in the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse’s Nunsense stage show.
