Since I was born without arms, I became fascinated by the limitless ways the human body can adjust to a variety of circumstances. As I learned to conquer physical barriers, I developed mental skills that allowed me to go on to achieve the seemingly impossible in my own, unique way.

When Jessica was born, both of her parents (Inez Cox and William Cox) were astounded to discover that their child lacked arms. They had no idea she would be born differently because all of the pregnancy tests came back normal. Jessica’s mother, Inez, struggled to accept the shocking and unexpected news and became quietly concerned about Jessica’s future.

Jessica’s parents decided to integrate her as much as possible into a regular environment. She attended a public school rather than a private or special needs school. She did what the other kids did, never thinking she was any different. However, Jessica felt restricted on the playground during recess because the people around her were overprotective and prevented her from climbing up the slide. Jessica sat on the swings, enraged and frustrated, daydreaming of flying.

Jessica grew up with prosthetic arms, which she had to practice with countless hours of after-school therapy. She could carry things with her prosthetic limbs, but she never connected with them and preferred to do everything with her feet. Jessica decided to stop wearing her prosthetic arms after 11 years and embrace her differences.

Jessica enrolled for a degree program at the University of Arizona where she graduated with a degree in Psychology and Communication.
