She was then homeschooled until she graduated from high school in 2015 to pursue her professional career alongside her education.
She gained acting experience during this time by appearing in several student films directed by aspiring directors at colleges such as USC, UCLA, and Chapman University, as well as appearing in guest roles on the Fox sitcoms Back to You in 2007 and Sons of Tucson in 2010.

Career
True Grit’
At 14 years old, Steinfeld received critical acclaim for her breakthrough role in the 2010 Western True Grit, as Mattie Ross, a headstrong teen determined to find her father’s killer.
To land the coveted role (which she described as “like winning the lottery”), she auditioned in character for directors Joel and Ethan Coen, wearing a homemade 1800s-style costume.
She eventually beat out over 15,000 other actresses to co-star with Hollywood heavyweights Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, and Matt Damon.
She did some of her own stunt work for the film, her first feature, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. (She was defeated by Melissa Leo of The Fighter.)
Romeo and Juliet
Following the success of True Grit, Steinfeld was chosen to be the face of Italian fashion brand Miu Miu and was cast as Juliet Capulet in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in 2011.
Because she was only 14 at the time, there was some controversy about onscreen nudity in the script, which director Carlo Carlei said needed to be revised to make the actress more age-appropriate.
The film didn’t come out until 2013, the same year she starred as Violet in the romantic drama Begin Again and as Petra Arkanian in the sci-fi action film Ender’s Game. She continued to demonstrate her acting abilities in 2014, appearing in films such as 3 Days to Kill, The Homesman, and The Keeping Room.
Pitch Perfect
Steinfeld first appeared in the Pitch Perfect franchise as Emily Junk in the musical comedy’s 2015 sequel, Pitch Perfect 2, which debuted with the highest box office total ever recorded for a musical.
Steinfeld sang in the film, alongside Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Elizabeth Banks, and landed a recording contract with Republic Records less than a week after its release. (She was also in the 2017 sequel, Pitch Perfect 3.)
