Early Life and Education
Mary Elle Fanning was born on April 9, 1998 in Conyers, Georgia, to Heather Joy (née Arrington), a college tennis player, and Steven J. Fanning, a minor league baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Her maternal grandfather was Rick Arrington, an American football player, and her aunt is ESPN reporter Jill Arrington. William Farrar, a gentleman farmer, is one of the Arrington family’s most notable ancestors.
Dakota Fanning, her older sister, is also an actress. They were both raised in the Southern Baptist Church.
Career
Elle Fanning began acting when she was three years old. In the miniseries Taken and the film I Am Sam, she played the younger version of her older sister Dakota’s characters.
Elle Fanning won her first independent role in the comedy, Daddy Day Care in 2002, when she was four years old.
The decision to cast her in the role of Ruth in The Door in the Floor (2004), opposite Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger, was anecdotal evidence of her emerging talent.
The producers of the film had planned to hire identical twins for the intense shooting schedule, but they were so impressed with Fanning that they only used her.
Elle Fanning made her film debut in Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo in December 2011. She portrayed Lily, a 13-year-old zoo employee who lives on the grounds with her only parental figure, Kelly (Scarlett Johansson).
