Dua Lipa, born August 22, 1995, is a popular American singer and actress who won a Grammy Award for her hit single “New Rules” and her album “Future Nostalgia.” Dua Lipa is the daughter of Kosovar Albanian refugees who arrived in London in the 1990s. In Albanian, her name “Dua” means “love,” and she has no middle name.

Early Life and Family
Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995, in London, England. Lipa’s parents, Dukagjin and Anessa, fled Pristina, Kosovo, in 1992 to avoid conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic targeted them because they were Kosovar Albanians.
Lipa’s parents were refugees who arrived in London. Despite the fact that they were both students (Lipa’s father studied dentistry and her mother law), they both worked in restaurants to make ends meet in their new home. Lipa was born in 1995.
Lipa wrote her first song when she was four years old. Her father had been in a rock band in addition to his dental studies, so she had a family connection to music.
“My father was a musician, and music was always played around the house, so it just always had a big impact on me,” she explained in an interview. She was raised on the music of Blondie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Sting, and Pink.
Lipa’s parents felt safe enough to return to their home country in 2006. Lipa, 11, and her younger siblings, sister Rina and brother Gjin, were returned to Kosovo.
Lipa had grown up speaking Albanian at home, but the move revealed that her language skills were inadequate for success in school. Her Albanian did improve over time.
She was able to make friends, who told her about the war in Kosovo that had occurred while her family was in London. Lipa was also introduced to new music by Kosovo’s hip-hop-dominated music scene.
Lipa returned to London at the age of 15, where she lived with a family friend. She convinced her parents that the move would benefit her education.
Her true ambition, however, was to pursue singing; she believed that launching a career in music would be impossible in Kosovo.
In 2020, she explained to CBS News, “I was thinking, I want to do music, but on a global scale. I need to return to the scene of the crime.”
Career
Lipa studied at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, where she had previously studied before her family relocated to Kosovo. In an attempt to gain attention, she also posted song covers on YouTube.
In a 2020 interview, she said, “Deep down, I wanted to have that Justin Bieber effect where someone would find me on YouTube!”
Lipa made a living by working in a restaurant. She also joined a modeling agency in the hopes of furthering her career. However, few jobs came her way because she was unwilling to lose weight as the agency demanded.
Lipa signed a record deal in 2015. That same year, she released her first single, “New Love.” More songs were released, but her self-titled album wasn’t released until 2017.
The singles from that album were only moderately successful until “New Rules” was released. The video for that smash hit has received over two billion views on YouTube. “IDGAF,” another album single, went platinum.
Lipa won Best New Artist at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019. That same year, she won a second Grammy for Best Dance Recording for “Electricity.”
Future Nostalgia, Lipa’s second album, was more personal than her debut. She’d come up with the title while in Las Vegas and had a writing credit on every song on the album.
Lipa was preparing to release Future Nostalgia in early March 2020. The album then leaked online just as the world was about to shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many other artists put their work on hold, but Lipa chose to release Future Nostalgia a week ahead of schedule.
Lipa won Best New Artist at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019. That same year, she won a second Grammy for Best Dance Recording for “Electricity.”
The week her album was released, Lipa was the top female artist on Spotify’s listening charts. Because tours were ruled out for 2020, Lipa live-streamed a concert called Studio 2054 in November, which featured Kylie Minogue, Bad Bunny, and John.
The stream was watched by over 5 million people, breaking the record for paid views.
Personal Life
Lipa began an on and off relationship with English chef Isaac Carew in 2013. They parted ways in February 2017. From August 2017 to January 2018, she dated Paul Klein, the then-lead singer of the American band LANY.
She later rekindled her romance with Carew, whom she dated from January 2018 to June 2019. She started dating American model, Anwar Hadid on June 14, 2019. Lipa and Hadid’s relationship ended in December 2021.
