Early Life and Education
Courtney ‘Coco’ Jones was born on January 4, 1998, as one of four children to Mike Jones and Javonda in Columbia, South Carolina, United States. Her father played in the NFL for four teams for nine seasons, and her mother is a studio singer.
Coco was raised in Lebanon, Tennessee, with three siblings: Steven, Aja, and Mike Jr. She began singing at a young age and gave her first stage performance at her kindergarten graduation in front of a packed auditorium of parents, singing ‘America the Beautiful.’
Career
When she was nine, she met Disney casting directors and began her career as a songwriter and actress. In 2006, she competed on the Disney Channels Worldwide Inc-owned American radio network ‘Radio Disney,’ gaining attention for the song ‘Real You.’
In 209, she was chosen to perform live on the Maury Povich-hosted syndicated American tabloid talk show ‘Maury Povich Show’ in the episode ‘The Most Talented Kids.’
In October 2010, she released her self-titled debut CD, ‘Coco Jones,’ which paved the way for her ‘UBU-STOP THE BULLYING’ concert series. That same year, she competed in Season 3 of ‘Radio Disney’s Next BIG Thing,’ alongside four other artists, including Kicking Daisies, Amber Lilly, Matthew Johnson, and Sacha Edwards.
During 2011-2012, she appeared as a guest star on the American Disney Channel sketch comedy series ‘So Random!’ and performed ‘Stand Up.’
Age 14
At the age of 14, she landed her real break as Roxanne “Roxie” Andrews, a famous singer, in the Paul Hoen directed Disney Channel Original Movie ‘Let It Shine.’ The musical teen television film premiered on June 15, 2012, in the United States and Canada, and on July 20, 2012, in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
In ‘Let It Shine,’ she co-starred with Tyler James Williams, Brandon Mychal Smith, and Trevor Jackson, among others.
The film received 13.9 million viewers during its premiere and was the number one film among the younger generation, ranging from six-year-olds to teenagers, in 2012, earning Coco widespread recognition and popularity.
Apart from acting, Coco also sang on several songs from the soundtrack of ‘Let It Shine,’ which went on to top the US Kid Albums chart.
She has also contributed solo to the songs ‘What I Said,’ ‘Who I’m Gonna Be,’ and ‘Good to Be Home,’ as well as with Tyler James Williams to the songs ‘Guardian Angel,’ ‘Me and You,’ and ‘Let It Shine.’
Coco also released her debut single ‘Holla at the DJ’ in 2012, which premiered on Radio Disney on December 6 and was released on iTunes the following day. Its video debuted on Disney Channel on December 12, that year, and later on VEVO.
Age 19 – 24
Jones released her first independent project Let Me Check It in 2017, following the release of her debut independent single “Peppermint” in 2014 while she was 16 years old. This was followed two years later by another EP called H.D.W.Y.
Jones spoke on her YouTube channel in September 2020 about her negative experiences with Disney and Hollywood Records at the start of her career. Following the release of Let It Shine, she was told she would star in a sequel, have her own television series, and be able to release a studio album.
These plans fell through after executives determined she was not marketable enough. Jones urged her audience to “do the math” on the situation, stating that colorism is a problem in the industry.
Audio clips from Jones’ video began to circulate in video clips on the social networking site TikTok, with some clips garnering millions of views.
Jones will play Hilary Banks in Bel-Air, Peacock’s dramatic reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, beginning in 2022.
Jones would also reveal that she had signed a deal with High Standardz/Def Jam, and that her major label debut single “Caliber” would be released on March 25.
