Early Life and Education
Blondie Chaplin grew up in Durban, South Africa, during the apartheid era, coming from a mixed-race background. He began performing music at the young age of 12 in local venues.
In the mid-1960s, he joined the Durban-based rock band The Flames with Ricky Fataar.
The Flames found success with their 1968 album Soulfire, which featured the hit cover “For Your Precious Love,” dominating South African charts for 13 weeks. Their talent caught the eye of Carl Wilson from The Beach Boys while they were performing in London.
Career
The Flames signed with The Beach Boys’ Brother Records label and released their self-titled album The Flame in 1970, becoming the only band besides The Beach Boys to record on that label.
Chaplin joined The Beach Boys in 1972 during a period of change for the band. He contributed to the albums Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” (1972) and Holland (1973). His lead vocals on the track “Sail On Sailor” became one of the band’s most memorable performances. Chaplin left the group in 1973 due to disagreements with management.
Following his departure from The Beach Boys, Chaplin released a self-titled solo album in 1977 and collaborated with Rick Danko of The Band.
He also worked with David Johansen on the 1981 album Here Comes the Night, co-writing several songs. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Chaplin toured with The Band as a guitarist and vocalist.
Starting in 1997, Chaplin joined The Rolling Stones as a backing vocalist, percussionist, and rhythm guitarist for their tours. He contributed to their album Bridges to Babylon (1997) and toured with the band for 15 years.
