Professor Jibril Aminu, a prominent Nigerian academic, cardiologist, and former government minister, has passed away at the age of 85.
He died in Abuja on Thursday, June 5, 2025, following a long illness.
Throughout his illustrious career, Aminu held several key positions, including Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, and Nigerian Ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2003. He also served two terms as Senator representing Adamawa Central.
As Minister of Petroleum, he was instrumental in the construction of the Eleme Refinery and numerous petroleum depots, as well as the reform of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
He also led the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation and chaired the OPEC Conference between 1991 and 1992.
In addition to his contributions to the energy sector, Aminu was a champion of educational reforms, including the establishment of the Nomadic Education Commission and the School for Gifted Children.
He was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost intellectuals and visionaries.
Funeral prayers are scheduled to take place at the National Mosque in Abuja, with burial to follow in his hometown of Song, Adamawa State. He leaves behind nine children.
