
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi is in mourning after his father, retired military officer Sunday Ndidi, died in a devastating road accident on Tuesday in Umunede, Delta State.
He was taken to a hospital in Agbor but sadly passed away on arrival, shocking Nigeria’s football world shortly after Ndidi captained the team to AFCON 2025 bronze in Morocco.
Ndidi’s club, Besiktas in Turkey, shared the tragic update on X, offering heartfelt condolences to the star midfielder and his family. Their statement read: “We mourn the loss of our player Wilfred Ndidi’s respected father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal road incident, and pray for his soul’s peace.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed solidarity too, as General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi shared the country’s support for Ndidi amid his grief.
Raised in Lagos barracks, Sunday Ndidi nurtured his son’s discipline and love for football, Ndidi had just dedicated an AFCON goal to him.
