Early Life and Education
Phat Joe’s early life saw him reside in Mafikeng, North West, and later in Polokwane, Limpopo, where his father held a lecturing position.
At the age of eight, his family emigrated to the United States of America, driven by the desire to escape the oppressive apartheid regime. During the ensuing twelve years in the U.S., he pursued his education and life there. In 1994, following South Africa’s transformative elections, Phat Joe’s parents returned to the country.
Upon their return, Phat Joe embarked on his broadcasting journey by joining the Mmabatho-based radio station Radio Bop in 1995. He took on the role of a radio DJ before transitioning to YFM in 1997.
His new role encompassed hosting the weekend breakfast show and serving as the station’s sales executive.
Harnessing his innovative spirit, he took on further responsibilities, eventually becoming the host of the weekday breakfast show in 1999, all while remaining at YFM.
