Early Life and Education
Born on November 19, 1939, in Ile Ikoyi Odan, Osupa, Ogbomosho, a city in Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, Chief Lere Paimo, MFR, hailed from a background of agriculture.
His father, a leader in the local farmers’ organization, cultivated tobacco and yams, while his mother engaged in trade.
Chief Lere Paimo commenced his primary education in Ogbomoso and later pursued his studies in the Gold Coast (current-day Ghana), culminating in a Teacher’s Grade Two certificate from a teacher training college.
Upon his return to Nigeria, he settled in Osogbo, working as a classroom teacher in a Baptist Missionary School.
Career
Commencing his acting journey in 1958 with the Oyin Adejobi theatre group, founded by Pa Oyinade Adejobi, he later joined Duro Ladipo’s Theatre Group, showcasing his talents in the stage play “Obamoro” as “Chief Basa.”
His breakthrough came with the lead role in the epic Yoruba film “Ogbori Elemosho” in 1963, catapulting him into the spotlight. Since then, he has been involved in the production and direction of numerous Nigerian films.
Around 1960, while working as a teacher in Osogbo, he joined the Oyin Adejobi theatre group, focused on performing plays for various audiences.
In 1961, Duro Ladipo invited him to Mbari Club, a cultural center founded by Ulli Beier. Recognized for his acting prowess, he took on leading roles, including playing Everyman in the Yoruba version of “Everyman,” earning the nickname Eda Onile ola.
Acknowledging his significant contributions to the Nigerian film industry, he received the National award of Member of the Federal Republic in 2005, alongside Zeb Ejiro, from former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Despite surviving a partial stroke in May 2013, he continued to make an impact, winning a N1 million cash prize in the Nigerian game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” in April 2014.
