Early Life and Education
Joe Ajaero was born on December 17, 1964, in Emekuku, Owerri North, Imo State. He got his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1990 and a post graduate diploma in Journalism from Times Journalism Institute in 1994.
In 1998, he obtained a master’s degree in Industrial and Labour Relations from the University of Lagos He also obtained a Law degree from Baze University, Abuja in 2023.
In 2003, He obtained a Certificate in Advance Tariff Structuring and Subsidy Design Option from the International Professional Practice Partnership, Cape Town, South Africa.
He obtained other certifications from St George’s Business School, Cambridge University; Harvard Business School; East and South African Management Institute (2011); International Labour Training Institute, Turin-Italy (2009);
Career
Joe Ajaero commenced his professional journey as a research officer at the Nigerian Army’s One Mechanised Infantry Division in Kaduna for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) between 1990 and 1991.
Later, he served as a reporter/correspondent and an assistant news editor at Vanguard Newspapers from 1992 to 2001.
Ajaero started his career with the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) in 2001, where he initially served as the Head of Training/Information. Over the years, he worked his way up and became the National President in 2005.
Throughout this role, Joe Ajaero has remained committed to fighting for better working conditions and welfare for electricity workers in Nigeria. Alongside this, he has fearlessly spoken out against government policies that he believes harm the rights and well-being of workers.
In 2023, Ajaero emerged as the elected President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, marking a significant milestone in his career. Notably, he became the first unionist from the power sector to assume this prestigious leadership position within the NLC.
