Early Life
Born in London in 1967 and later moving to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of five before returning to London at 19, Helen Yawson showed a natural talent for singing from a young age. After joining Matthew Ashimolowo’s Christian ministry in London in 1986, she became a lead singer in the church choir, where she led praise and worship performances in Nigeria, Canada, and across the UK for 7 years.
Career
Helen Yawson’s musical journey began in 1988 when she joined the Kingsway Four-Square Band and Singers before becoming part of the Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) Choir.
Over the years, she led vocally on various KICC Choir albums and wrote songs for two of them. In 1999, she released her debut solo album ‘Blessed and Highly Favoured’. Helen continued to make music, releasing her second album ‘Forever Grateful’ in 2001 and a worship album ‘My God and I’ in 2012.
She has performed alongside esteemed gospel artists and has taken the stage at numerous conferences and concerts in Ghana and the UK. Additionally, she has released albums such as ‘Anyday’ in 2006, ‘JUST HYMNS’ in 2014, and authored a book titled ‘More Than A Song’ in 2015.
Helen’s musical career has been marked by achievements like becoming the music director of KICC Ghana and holding a successful live concert in 2012 which resulted in a live DVD recording.
In a period of rapid growth for the Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) in the UK, Helen played a pivotal role in the choir and music ministry. This came during the church’s expansion under the guidance of Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, leading to the conversion of numerous individuals to Christianity.
Helen took on more responsibilities, becoming the Music Coordinator at KICC’s North London satellite church in 1997, overseeing a group of talented singers and musicians and assisting with the coordination of the main Mass Choir.
Personal Life
Feeling a calling to ministry, Yawson relocated to Accra, Ghana in 2002, where she was ordained as a Reverend Minister by Matthew Ashimolowo.
She currently serves as the Head of the Music and Creative Division and leads the KICC Winning Women Ministries. Helen is married to Andrew Yawson and the couple has two daughters.
