Early Life and Education
Cordae was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and later relocated to Suitland, Maryland, where he spent most of his childhood. His fascination with music began at a young age, inspired by his father’s fondness for legendary hip-hop artists like Rakim and Nas.
He started penning his own raps at 15 and delved deeper into the genre through YouTube research. As he grew older, his passion for rap intensified, often distracting him from his studies. After graduating high school in 2015, he briefly attended Towson University before dropping out in 2018, citing the challenges of being a first-generation college student. He then made the bold move to Los Angeles to pursue his rap career.
Career
Cordae released his debut mixtape, Anxiety, in 2014. He then went on to release two more mixtapes the following years; I’m So Anxious and I’m So Anonymous in 2016 and 2017 respectively, under the stage name Entendre, as a teenager.
In May 2018, Cordae dropped his debut single, a remix of Eminem’s 1999 song, “My Name Is” which he(Cordae) refers to as his “introduction to the world” accompanied by a music video on YouTube. He subsequently released tracks like “Fighting Temptations”, and “Kung Fu”, including “Old Niggas” as a response to J. Cole’s “1985”.
Cordae debuted live at Rolling Loud with YBN Nahmir and YBN Almighty Jay in May 2018. He also performed with them again the same year at the XXL freshman show in New York City. Cordae has actively supported Black Lives Matter, participating in protests since 2016. He was arrested at a 2020 Breonna Taylor protest and advocated defunding the police.
