Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a respected elder statesman and leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has passed away at the age of 96.
The iconic figure in Nigerian politics died peacefully on February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State. His family confirmed the news in a statement, expressing gratitude for his remarkable life of service to Nigeria and humanity.
Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, Adebanjo’s political journey began in 1943 as a follower of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. He later joined the Action Group in 1951 and became a close ally of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Throughout his life, he was known for his steadfast commitment to truth, justice, and the pursuit of a better Nigeria.
Adebanjo was not only a lawyer and journalist but also a fearless advocate for democracy and good governance. As a key figure in Nigeria’s political history, he remained vocal about national issues until his final days. His leadership of Afenifere further solidified his legacy as a champion for Yoruba interests and national unity.
The family announced that funeral arrangements are underway and condolence registers have been opened at his Lagos home and his country residence. Chief Adebanjo is survived by his wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
