Early life and Education
Born in Benin 1960, Angélique Kidjo grew up surrounded by music. Her dad played tunes, her mum danced and a video director.
At age 6, she was onstage too, already learning of how sing and dance with her brothers, mixing African sounds with Western ones.
In 1983, politics pushed her to Paris, where jazz and new music lit a creative spark. Her journey began there, leading to becoming a world-famous singer.
Career
In 2007, Time magazine called her “Africa’s premier diva.She performed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on July 23, 2021.
