Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, Nigeria’s esteemed live-band maestro, has died at the age of 50. The family confirmed that he passed away on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada. Born January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Shuga rose from a challenging early life marked by polio to become a defining figure in Nigeria’s live-music landscape.
In 1998, Shuga founded the renowned Shuga Band, which began at Pintos Bar in Ikeja, Lagos. Over the years, the group expanded into a 14-member ensemble that became a staple at weddings, corporate events, and state functions, earning a reputation for high-caliber performances.
Through Shuga Entertainment, he cultivated a lasting brand of professionalism and live-music excellence, and he also established the Shuga Limb Foundation to support people with disabilities and contribute to community initiatives.
Tributes from fellow musicians, industry colleagues, and fans have begun to pour in, praising his artistry, leadership, and mentorship. The family has requested privacy as memorial plans are arranged, with details to be announced in due course. Shuga’s imprint on Nigeria’s live-music culture, both on stage and through his philanthropic work will be remembered as a lasting legacy.
