Popoola was born on 17 June 1980 in London, United Kingdom, to Nigerian parents. He grew up partly in Nigeria, attending St. Saviour’s School in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, and later Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Osun State.
He earned a First Class degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos in 2002, followed by a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering with a focus on Finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2006.

Temi Popoola started his career in London as an asset manager, researching investment opportunities in Africa’s energy sector. He then moved to New York, where he worked as an equity derivatives trader at Bank of America Securities.
He returned to Nigeria in 2009 to join United Bank for Africa (UBA) as Head of Structured Products and Investments. Between 2010 and 2015, he worked at CSL Stockbrokers, a subsidiary of FCMB, where he led sales and trading operations.
