Early Life and Education
Kene Okwuosa grew up in South East London, UK, where he met his future business partner Moses Babatope. Both of them dreamed of making a real impact in Nigeria’s film industry. As kids, they watched their family members order DVDs and VCDs of Nollywood movies, and that early exposure sparked their interest in film distribution.
For his education, Okwuosa studied International Business at the University of Greenwich, then went on to London Metropolitan University for Globalisation and Business Law. In 2019, he completed the Leaders at Scale program at INSEAD.
Career
Okwuosa has spent over 20 years working in cinema exhibition, operations, film distribution, and production across the UK, US, and Nigeria.
In 2012, he and his partner tapped into President Goodluck Jonathan’s Intervention Funds for Nigeria’s creative industry and got a N200 million loan to open their first three-screen cinema in Surulere, Lagos. It started slow, but the cinema eventually became one of the biggest in the country, and they kept expanding.
Today, Filmhouse sells about half of all cinema tickets in Nigeria. From 2011 to 2018, Okwuosa was Group Deputy Managing Director of Filmhouse Group, and in 2018 he stepped up as Group CEO of both Filmhouse Group and FilmOne Limited. That same year, he took over as managing director of Filmhouse Cinemas after Kene Mkparu left.
He brought in premium formats like 4DX, IMAX, DBOX, and the Cubes, those VVIP private screening rooms Filmhouse is known for. Okwuosa has won some serious awards over the years.
