Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, passed away early Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 89, according to his family.
Born in Zaria, Kaduna State in 1936, Uwais served as Chief Justice from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. He was widely respected for his commitment to judicial integrity and reform.
Following his retirement, he led the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, which delivered an important report aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s electoral process.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hailed Uwais as an outstanding jurist and national figure, offering condolences to his family and the judiciary.
Funeral plans are underway, with services expected to take place at the National Mosque in Abuja. Tributes continue to flow in, celebrating his enduring legacy.
